The weekends are the perfect time for children and their families to reinforce the past week’s school lessons and explore activities in and around their home town. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor educational fun, there are many things happening this weekend for kids in Oviedo and the surrounding Central Florida area.
If you’re looking to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor weather while the kids have the day off school, test their science and nature knowledge by taking the time to visit one of Oviedo’s many nearby nature trails. Differing trail lengths and difficulties allow you to choose which hiking path will be best suited for your family.
- Bear Creek Nature Trail is located right inside the Winter Springs suburbs. Nearly one mile long, the trail is a small loop that mostly follows a flowing creek.
- Black Hammock Wilderness Area is a longer adventure, with a balloon-type trail lasting for roughly four miles. If the kids can make it until the end they’ll enjoy a walk along a wooden boardwalk and a lush variety of plant life.
- The Lake Jesup East Tract is a two-mile hike with a great surprise. Along the trail is an old observation tower that offers visitors an enjoyable view of the surrounding conservation area.
Orlando International Drive
For families who like taking day-long trips but aren’t interested in long drives, Orlando’s International Drive is a great way to spend the day. The International Drive, commonly known as I-Drive, is Orlando’s tourist strip. It’s kind of like the Las Vegas Strip, but much more family-friendly! The 11-mile thoroughfare is home to attractions such as the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium and Wonderworks, an interactive science entertainment center located in an upside-down building. A number of dining options along the street allow you to take the family out for lunch or dinner, as well.
Let the kids take a break from structured classroom learning by exploring Oviedo’s own Lukas Nursery, which offers an explorative experience the whole family is sure to remember. The Butterfly Encounter allows children and adults alike to step into an enclosed butterfly farm filled with classical music, bubbling water, flowering plants and hundreds of flying butterflies. Make the weekend educational by watching caterpillars and chrysalises live and hatch right before your eyes. The tour area can even be reserved for magical birthday parties!
